TOCFL  (For Taiwan)

The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) is a set of standardized language proficiency tests developed for non-native speakers of Chinese. CEFR organizes language proficiency in three bands and six levels. In order to meet the actual Chinese teaching situations overseas, however, SC-TOP developed a preliminary band: the Band Novice, which means the overall organization of four bands and eight levels. Four bands include: Band Novice, Band A, Band B, and Band C. Each band is further divided into two levels making a total of eight levels: Novice 1, Novice 2, and Level 1 to Level 6.

TOCFL A1/A2 is designed for learners who :

  • have studied Chinese in Taiwan for 120-360 hours in Taiwan, or for 240-720 hours in non-Chinese speaking regions.

  • know between 500 and 1,000 basic Chinese vocabulary items and able to use basic grammar and sentence structures.

TOCFL B1/B2 is designed for learners who :

  • are non-native speakers of Chinese at the intermediate level.

  • have studied Chinese in Taiwan for 360-960 hours in Taiwan, or for 720-1920 hours in non-Chinese speaking regions.

  • know between 2,500 and 5,000 basic Chinese vocabulary items and able to use basic grammar and sentence structures.

TOCFL C1/C2 is designed for learners who :

  • are non-native speakers of Chinese at the advanced level.

  • have studied Chinese in Taiwan for over 960 hours in Taiwan, or for 1,920 hours in non-Chinese speaking regions.

  • know about 8,000 Chinese vocabulary items.

HSK (For China)

Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency,assesses non-native Chinese speakers’ abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily, academic and professional lives. HSK consists of six levels, namely HSK (level I), HSK (level II), HSK (level III), HSK (level IV), HSK (level V), and HSK (level VI).

The HSK (Level I) :

HSK 1 is intended for students who have studied Chinese for a semester (half an academic year), with 2-3 class hours in each week. These students have mastered 150 commonly used words and basic grammar patterns.

The HSK (Level II) :

HSK 2 is intended for students who have studied Chinese for two semesters (an academic year), with 2-3 class hours in each week. These students have mastered 300 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.

The HSK (Level III) :

HSK 3 is intended for students who have mastered 600 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.

The HSK (Level IV) :

HSK 4 is intended for students who have studied Chinese2-4 class hours per week for four semesters (two academic years). These students have mastered 1,200 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.

The HSK (Level V) :

HSK 5 is intended for students who have studied Chinese 2-4 class hours per week for more than two academic years. These students have mastered 2,500 commonly used words and related grammar patterns.

HSK (Level VI) :

HSK 6 is intended for students who have mastered 5,000 or more commonly used words.
